What to Expect from a Trip to the South of France

Think South of France, think spectacular rocky headlands, long, sandy beaches, and the inviting, turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea. If you're staying at Le Montourey Ste-Maxime and St-Raphael on the Côte d’Azur are worth seeking out for beach fun or a spot of snorkelling. In Languedoc, the golden sand seems infinite and there are many great spots to pitch your towel and bucket-and-spade. Try Vias or Valras Plage near campsites Les Sables du Midi and La Carabasse, or the resorts of Carnon and La Grande Motte nearer to Le Lac des Rêves. Wherever you decide to go, you’ll find everything you need for a great family day-out at the seaside.

Cities + Towns
There are so many ‘must-visit’ towns and cities in the South of France. To name a few: Monaco! This is the world’s smallest country, famed for its casino, royal family and Formula 1 racing. Nice – for its classy Promenade des Anglais. St-Tropez: it has buckets of glamour, tout simplement. Montpellier – a fashionable, lively, university town, often listed as the city in France most French people would like to live in. Carcassonne – serving up ramparts, jousting and centuries of fascinating history.

Days out + special events
Try the Aqualand water parks (Fréjus in the Côte d’Azur; Cap d’Agde in Languedoc) for splashy thrills and spills on flumes and in wave pools. Nice has an excellent aquarium. Luna Park (also Côte d’Azur) is a fun-packed fun fair. In Languedoc, the Canal du Midi is a different sort of playground – an extraordinary feat of engineering and a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can also explore its banks by bike, with a departure point close to campsite La Carabasse. And Carcassonne – a ‘go-to’ destination in its own right – runs a superlative summer festival in July, celebrating art in all its forms and for all ages. A visit will make your holiday complete.

Beaches + culture
Discover the best of beachside culture in the South of France. The Ile Ste-Marguerite, a short boat trip from glamorous Cannes, is a nature reserve island with beautiful beaches and great picnic spots. Then there's fragrant Grasse: known as the World Capital of Perfume. Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is one of the most beautiful villages of France with a spot of river swimming or canoeing possible at nearby Pont du Diable. Food and wine in this part of the world is inexhaustibly brilliant and always surprising thanks to superb local ingredients. Think fragrant herbs, olive oil, truffles, seafood, and classic dishes such as Salade Niçoise, Daube Provençal (hearty beef stew) or Bouillabaisse (fishy soup), all washed down with superlative red, white and, of course, rosé wines. Hard to beat!
